WILLIAM BOBO^*

William Bobo was a member of the world famous Dixie Hummingbirds.  He was born on April 19, 1921, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  He died on April 28, 1976.  He was a boyhood friend to Ira Tucker. In Spartanburg, The Dixie Hummingbirds practiced at Bobo's grandfather's house. 

Bobo had a reputation as one of the most profound bass voices in the history of the genre.  He was nicknamed "Thunder." He had a major influence on Melvin Franklin of the Temptations, among others.  Bobo started as a replacement for Jimmy Bryant in the Heavenly Gospel Singers.  Eventually joined the Birds in 1943 during their run at cafe Society in New York City.
